CCTV images have been released by Merseyside Police of a man who officers believe might have important information after a taxi driver was assaulted in St Helens on Friday 13th March. North West Ambulance Service called police officers to Millfields, Ecclestone, at about 11pm to a report of a 25 year old taxi driver having been punched by another man.

Police officers believe that the taxi driver had picked up the offender in Queens Square, Liverpool city centre, at about 10.15pm. The offender has asked to be taken to St Helens, and he has then asked the driver to take him to a cash machine at Sainsburys supermarket on Millfields.

When the driver has stopped at the cash point, both of the men have got out of the taxi. The offender has started to argue about the fare and has then punched the taxi driver; this knocked the driver to the ground and left him unconscious, before the offender has run off.

A member of the public has come to the aid of the taxi driver and has phoned the emergency services. The victim was taken to hospital, where he received treatment for a cut to his forehead and a small puncture wound to his lip. It is believed that no weapons were used during the incident.

Patrols attended at the scene and CCTV from the area was located and reviewed by officers. There is an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident continuing.

Detective Constable Roy Waller, St Helens CID, said ‘This was a vicious assault which left the victim in hospital with a head injury that prompted the need for a CT scan. Thankfully he is making a very good recovery and I want to reassure people that we are doing everything we can to trace the person responsible for the attack.

‘Taxi drivers provide a vital service which many of us take for granted and they have a right to earn a living, day or night, without having to worry about being verbally abused, threatened or attacked.

‘As part of our inquiries into this incident, we have issued CCTV stills of a man who we think may have important information which could help us with our investigation. I would appeal to him, or anyone who recognises him, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.’

Anybody who has got any information can contact detectives in St Helens CID on 0151 777 6075 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
