Brook Street public toilets set to close

With savings of £2.23m needed to be found from St Helens Council’s environmental service budget during 2017/18, as a non-statutory service, a decision has been made to close Brook Street public toilets.

The proposed closure date for this facility, located in St Helens town centre, is Friday 31 March.

Other toilets are available to use within the town centre.

Commenting on the decision, St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Green, Smart and Sustainable Borough, Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron, said:

“It is quite telling that these decisions have to be made during the most prolonged and brutal period of austerity since 2010.

“I fundamentally don’t think that austerity works. The national debt has tripled, yet the Government is committed to cutting a further £20.6m between now and 2020 from our council.

“This is austerity. If people don’t like the outcomes, as I don’t, then they don’t like austerity – a Government choice which isn’t working.”
