Brits would rather have cuppa with mum than the Queen

  • Brits WOULD RATHER have a coffee with mum than Mary Berry
  • Dame Julie Walters a more popular choice than the Queen

Coffee and cake lovers rejoice! Today is World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, Macmillan Cancer Support’s flagship fundraiser where people from around the country come together to lap-up lattes, scoff sponges, and raise money for people living with cancer.

While most people will be sharing cuppas with colleagues and friends, research from Macmillan Cancer Support and ICM reveals our top choice for a coffee companion is Mum, coming in as the most popular choice, taking 34% of the votes. This is more than double the number of people who picked the Queen (15%), almost four times more than baking queen Mary Berry (9%), and almost seven times more than Piers Morgan (5%).

It seems that when it comes to sharing a cuppa, we prefer British role models to international superstars, with actress and writer Dame Julie Walters (18%) receiving more than twice as many votes as American singer Beyoncé (8%). As the second most popular pick, receiving more votes than the Queen herself, perhaps Dame Julie is the Queen of Coffee Morning.

Choosing from a list of famous faces, the UK’s top picks to have coffee with are:

  1. My mum (34%)
  2. Julie Walters (18%)
  3. The Queen (15%)
  4. Idris Elba (10%)
  5. Mary Berry (9%)
  6. Claudia Winkleman (8%)
  7. Beyoncé (8%)
  8. Piers Morgan (5%)

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning wouldn’t be the same without a sweet or savoury treat, whether lovingly home-baked or purchased en route to work – and it seems the UK is unanimous in its favourite choice. According to data from Marks & Spencer, the official partner of World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, the classic Victoria Sponge is their most popular cake.

Despite television programs like the Great British Bake Off favouring unusual flavours and intricate designs, the most popular choices on the list suggest Brits still favour the tried and tested classics. Hot on the heels of the victorious Victoria Sponge are other showstoppers such as the Lemon Drizzle and Carrot Cake.

Based on M&S sales figures, the top five cakes are:

  1. Victoria Sponge
  2. Lemon Drizzle Cake
  3. Chocolate Fudge Cake
  4. Coffee & Walnut Cake
  5. Carrot Cake

M&S has supported the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning since 2010, and during this time they have raised £10million for Macmillan, to fund vital services such as Macmillan healthcare professionals, who support people affected by cancer in local communities across the UK.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan’s flagship fundraising event and takes place each year in September. It’s a simple idea where millions of people get together with family, friends or colleagues over coffee and cake and donate to Macmillan Cancer Support. One in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime, so it’s time to get together and change lives with every slice.

Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is taking place today – Friday 29 September 2017.
