Big summer clean-up to get the borough blooming

0

A summer clean-up has been planned in Wigan Borough to spruce up streets and greenspaces.

Thanks to major success in last year’s North West in Bloom Awards, Wigan Borough has been put forward for The Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition and groups across the borough are going for gold.

Following on from Spring Clean, another week of events will take place, led by volunteers and supported by Wigan Council, in a bid to get the borough spick and span for judging this summer.

The council is encouraging people to get involved by joining a local in bloom group or doing some planting or a litter pick in their local area.

From Monday 27th June to Sunday 3rd July there will be a week of events people can get involved with.

Residents, schools and businesses are being called on to help clean up the borough and do their bit in their area to help scoop the top prize.

In Blooms groups are on a recruitment campaign to get as many people as possible involved in planting, pruning and perfecting floral displays.

This year The Royal Horticultural Society is asking people to pledge to turn a grey space into a ‘green’ living plant space and have set a goal of transforming 6,000 spaces by the end of 2017.

Councillor Kevin Anderson, cabinet member for environment, said: “This is a great opportunity to help get our borough ready for when it will be showcased on a national stage for Britain in Bloom. It is wonderful that we have been recognised at a national level and it proves how much pride people in the borough have for their communities. Please get involved and show your support for our bid to win gold.”

The Summer Bloom clean-up is part of an annual programme to keep Wigan Borough tidy.

More details will be posted on the council’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
