Those who work with young people can see acts of heartwarming kindness and compassion on a regular basis, but for many of us, sensational press reports focusing on the negative, can sometimes portray a pretty dismal view of the younger generation.

One student from Rainhill High School is redressing this imbalance and has amazed his parents and teachers with a totally selfless act of generosity that deserves recognition.

Year 7 pupil Anthony Ambage has donated every single penny of his own birthday money for the past eleven years to worthwhile organisations and charities.

Anthony decided on this admirable undertaking back in 2007 when he was a Year 3 student at St Anne’s Primary School.

Anthony said: “I saw a video on Youtube about charities and thought it was good. I wanted to get involved as I consider myself to be lucky, have a nice and a future ahead of me – so I want to help others who are less fortunate than me.

“I looked into the charities and couldn’t decide which one I wanted to support the most, so each year I chose five organisations and gave them each a share of my birthday money. Although five doesn’t seem enough, I want to help them all. I choose a different five every birthday, that way I can give to more.”

So far charities that have benefitted from Anthony’s generosity include:

Leukaemia Research
British Heart Foundation
Cancer Research UK
Send My Friend To School
Barnardo’s
Save the Children
Guide Dogs for the Blind
Shelter
NSPCC

Since 2007 Anthony has donated to an incredible 55 charities and is now interested in getting involved with events for The Anthony Walker and Sophie Lancaster Foundation, his high schools associated charitable organisations.

Events for these worthwhile causes at Rainhill High School feature student performances in Dance, Music and Drama – which, with having ambitions to be an actor himself, will also help Anthony with his own personal goals.

Anthony is a genuine hero, inspiring a generation by sacrificing his own birthday money for the benefit of others. We wish him every success with his aspirations to become an actor, although we feel that there could be an even more important career waiting for this unselfish young man in the future.
