It was a day of discovery and creativity for 40 students from St Helens secondary schools when they joined up with Carmel College, an outstanding Sixth Form College in the borough.

The students enjoyed exciting and challenging work on advanced mathematics and creative writing, aimed at expanding their abilities in those subjects. They learnt about Carmel’s own ‘Raising Aspirations’ programme, which prepares Carmel students applying for places at the most prestigious higher education institutions in the country.

Visiting students were given a short tour of the college’s excellent facilities, and had the opportunity to question current Carmel students.

Councillor Jeanette Banks, St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said: “I am delighted to see Carmel College and our secondary schools working together again to help improve our students’ outcomes and to broaden their horizons.

“This project is one of our joint ventures in St Helens involving our schools and Carmel College. I hope our students found the day informative and inspiring, and that it has provided them with food for thought in terms of their next steps after GCSE.”

Rob Peacock, Principal of Carmel College, added: “I really believe that the young people of St Helens are as talented as those from anywhere else in the country. They have a huge amount to offer and have great futures ahead of them.

“This conference offers them the opportunity to build on the work done by their teachers, parents and guardians and is intended to help them in really achieving their full potential.”

Finally, one of the students who attended said: “The Raising Aspirations Day touched on many of the things I was worried or anxious about in what I’ll do after secondary school. It was inspiring but also very realistic, in that it showed what I could achieve if I apply myself to my studies now and aim higher.”
