£4.6m for congestion reducing road schemes

Road schemes across the county worth £4.6 million, which aim to reduce congestion, have been agreed by Lancashire County Council’s Cabinet.

These schemes aim to improve the reliability and timing of traffic signal junctions to increase capacity on the roads.

Councillors have agreed which schemes would go ahead, using funding which was given by the government last year.

In the Preston area, this would involve improvements on Ringway and Guild Way, Bluebell Way, the A583 Riversway corridor, around junction 31 of the M6 and the A59 roundabout on Preston New Road and Whalley Road at Samlesbury.

In East Lancashire, the schemes include M65 junction 10 along Westgate then Active Way, junction 13 of the M65 around the college entrance, and the Rosegrove junction in Burnley.

The proposed schemes have been assessed for their estimated cost and impact on people’s journeys, with the aim of reducing congestion at certain times.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, Cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “These schemes will help to improve the reliability of our traffic signals and reduce congestion, which benefits everyone.

“It’s important to us that people can get around, and that the county continues to be a great place for business.

“Cabinet will agree the list of schemes this week, following the detailed work that’s been done by our officers to understand the specific issues at these sites and look at possible solutions.”

The funding was given to the county council last year from the government’s National Productivity Investment Fund. Since then a process has been taking place to assess the proposed schemes, before agreeing which ones will take place.
