National Apprenticeship Week 2017

To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2017 (6-10 March) a range of open evenings and activities have been arranged in St Helens to highlight the benefits of an apprenticeship, how they can be secured –and busting myths associated with them.

Held within various venues around the borough – including St Helens College, Waterside Training Limited and St Helens Chamber – the open days, events and activities, will give those interested in kick-starting a career in a range of industries, including construction, engineering, health and social care, digital, logistics, hospitality and catering, hair dressing, a flavour of what to expect. Experts will be on hand to help identify career choices, offer interview tips and help with application forms and CVs.

The programme of activities have been designed to complement careers education schemes of work and commissioned Information Advice and Guidance (IAG) services. The aim of the activities is to raise awareness to young people, parents and carers of the opportunities of an apprenticeship.

Jette Burford, St Helens College Principal, said: “St Helens College is proud to provide an extensive range of apprenticeship opportunities and with National Apprenticeship Week on the horizon; we are committed to increasing the awareness of apprenticeships and the many exciting opportunities they can create for young people.”

St Helens Council Leader, Barrie Grunewald, said: “This is a great opportunity for young, enthusiastic people, looking to get their foot on the employment ladder, to discover the benefits of apprenticeships, which – I believe -hold the perfect balance of learning and working – while earning a wage at the same time.

“I would encourage anyone considering undertaking an apprenticeship to attend one of these events, as it could ultimately be that step closer to landing a dream job.”

Joanne Abraham, Workforce Development Manager at St Helens Chamber added: “It is fantastic to see how well valued apprenticeships are by local businesses and the impact their can have on their staff development. We currently have over 500 apprentices in learning in businesses around St Helens and beyond, and are always looking to fill new positions as businesses continue to create apprenticeship vacancies.”
