Merseyside Police is investigating after reports of an assault and criminal damage in Southport yesterday, Wednesday 7 February.

At around 7.15pm, a report was received of a woman throwing a liquid at a man near to shops on Sandbrook Road. Damage was also caused to a window on Shirdley Crescent. Emergency services attended and the substance was identified by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) as bleach, resulting in minor injuries. This has been confirmed as household bleach as opposed to any form of acid.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify those responsible.

Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: “I want to reassure the community that this appears to be an isolated, domestic incident targeting the victim, who was thankfully not seriously injured, but is understandably shocked.

“It is alarming to see such a substance used in such a callous way and we are supporting the victim and are keen to speak to anyone who saw this incident or has any information. We will act on all information provided and ensure that those responsible are removed from the streets and put before the courts.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, call 101 quoting incident number 18200032837, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also use their online form anonymously: crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information/give-information-online.
