The new Mayor of West Lancashire Councillor Neil Furey will support three fabulous causes during his year in office.

Councillor Furey and the Mayoress Julie Furey will raise funds for 42nd Ormskirk (Skelmersdale St Paul’s) Scouts, Evermoor Hub and The Sewing Rooms in Skelmersdale.

Councillor Furey said: “These are three very worthy causes that I hope the people of West Lancashire will join me in supporting over the next 12 months as we hope to raise as much money as possible.”

Fundraising events will be planned over the next 12 months for these very worthy causes. One of the first will be an Alternative Royal Ascot Day at Lancashire Manor Hotel on Thursday 22 June. Tickets cost £25 including lunch, afternoon tea, entertainment from Elvis impersonator Elvis Brettini and the racing live on a big screen. Just a few tickets are left available from Ann England quickly on 01695 585033 or ann.england@westlancs.gov.uk.

Evermoor Hub is the hugely popular facility formerly known as Digmoor Community Centre which is now run independently from the Council by volunteers.

Hundreds of people use and in many cases rely on the activities offered which include a food bank, dance and martial arts clubs, luncheon clubs and IT facilities.

Special events include fun days and community clean ups, and the Hub opens on Christmas Day to provide meals for those who would otherwise spend the day on their own without a Christmas lunch. Food parcels are provided over Christmas for the needy.

Margaret Highton, Chairman of the management team, said: “We are delighted to be one of the Mayor’s charities. We have to raise all the money for our activities ourselves, so this is great for us and we hope to use any funds we receive on our community activities.”

The 42nd Ormskirk (Skelmersdale St. Paul’s) Scout Group have 85 members, 71 of whom are children aged between 6 – 14. They take part in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. The rest are the adult Leaders in the Group. They enjoy lots of traditional Scouting activities including working towards badges and awards. All sections enjoy traditional Scout camping weekends and even the Beaver Section has sleepovers. Two Scouts are going to Denmark this Summer with a County Contingency. They have raised their fares through a range of activities.

Ian Flavell, Group Scout Leader, said “We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the Mayor’s Charities. We hope funds will help buy craft, sports and camping equipment and other items for each section and contribute to ongoing group costs.”

The Sewing Rooms, based in Skelmersdale, is a not-for profit organisation that uses the skill of sewing to help people in a variety of ways. A group for younger women teaches sewing skills that could help them get a job or become self-employed. Another group is for women over 50 who may have lost their job, so as well as learning new skills the women don’t become isolated. There are also popular community events.

Paula Gamester, a co-director, said: “It is a real honour to be selected as one of the Mayor’s charities. We hope to use money we receive on community projects such as Your Sew Fab, a project designed for young people and Patchwork Buddies for women over 50.”
