LGA responds to latest HIV statistics

Responding to Public Health England’s annual HIV statistics for 2018, which show a 28 per cent decline in new HIV diagnoses since 2015, Cllr Ian Hudspeth, Chairman of the Local Government Association’s Community Wellbeing Board, said:

“People diagnosed with HIV are able to live independent, fulfilling lives due to the significant progress made by councils and their partners in supporting them, as these latest statistics demonstrate. This major public health success takes us one step closer to the Government’s commitment to end the transmission of HIV by 2030.

“It is important that tomorrow’s Spending Round provides much-needed investment in council services, including public health. Every pound invested by government in council-run services, such as public health, can relieve pressure on other essential services like the NHS and save much more money further down the line.

“Councils also want to see the national rollout of PrEP, which will help defeat the spread of HIV, sped up alongside a clearly agreed process for routinely commissioning and funding PrEP provision in sexual health services provided by local authorities.”
