Lancashire County Council has been handing out grants to organisations that provide help for people who cannot afford to eat this week.

County Councillor Kevin Ellard, chairman of Lancashire County Council has presented £5,000 to St Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Fleetwood, £2,060 to Fylde Food Bank in St Anne’s and £10,000 to the Community Gateway Association in Preston.

The food poverty grants are being given to groups across the county to help them to continue providing crucial services for residents who need them the most.

County Councillor Ellard said: “These groups are a lifeline to many people who can’t afford to eat healthily.

“Their services are very well used, but like many organisations, they struggle at a time when money is tight.

“When people struggle to eat, there will be serious consequences for their health, which is why we need to do all we can to help these organisations keep going.

“While visiting the groups I’ve been very impressed with the tremendous job they do and the dedication and commitment shown by people who run them. I hope this funding means they can carry on providing their vital services for years to come.”

Lancashire County Council approved £150,000 in Food Poverty Grants to be handed to 22 groups in December last year.

The grants must be invested in facilities such as cooking equipment, storage and training to make organisations more resilient and ensure they can continue to operate.

They cannot be spent on everyday expenses such as paying for food or electricity.
