Knowsley’s Working Well programme received a highly commended accolade at the MJ Awards last week.  The programme was a finalist in the Public Health Partnerships category.

Set up in 2004, The MJ Awards recognise and promote the best work of local government managers and staff.  Over the years, the MJ Awards have expanded to become one of the premier ways of recognising and praising innovation in local government.

Through the Working Well programme, Knowsley Council is working with businesses across Knowsley to promote and encourage the health and wellbeing of staff. Businesses signing up for the Working Well programme are encouraged to achieve six standards which cover healthy eating, physical activity, alcohol reduction, smoking cessation, mental health and wellbeing and health and safety.  By signing up to and achieving these standards, businesses have benefited from reduced sickness absence and improving productivity as well as contributing towards the long term aim of  reducing premature deaths, particularly for  lifestyle related illnesses such as heart disease, strokes and obesity.

Knowsley Chamber of Commerce has been a firm supporter of the council’s Working Well Programme since it was established in 2011.  By taking part in the programme, Knowsley businesses can access a wide range of support including discounted fitness memberships, exercise classes, free health checks, money matters, quit smoking at work programme, counselling, physiotherapy.  Additionally, Working Well grants are available for small to medium sized companies who wish to introduce health and wellbeing activities in the workplace.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said “It was a fantastic achievement to be shortlisted for this Award and to receive the highly commended accolade.  It is great recognition for the team whose dedication and commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of employees has been acknowledged.”
