Join the Great British Spring Clean!

West Lancashire Borough Council is inviting you to support the Great British Spring Clean.

Following the success of similar campaigns over the last few years, which attracted over 250,000 people to take part in nationwide litter picking events, the Keep Britain Tidy Group have launched the 2019 Great British Spring Clean campaign.

This year the initiative  began on Friday 22 March 2019 and is running until Tuesday 23 April and the Keep Britain Tidy Group is aiming to inspire over half a million people to participate in community clean ups.

West Lancashire Borough Council’s Parks and Countryside Ranger Service have already held clean ups with volunteers at Beacon Country Park and Tawd Valley Park, with more than 20 bags of litter being collected at the Tawd Valley event.

Further events due to take place are the Cheshire Lines Action Day on Wednesday 3 April and a clean-up of Tawd Valley Park on Saturday 6 April. Volunteers are more than welcome at the sessions, both of which start at 10am, and should meet at Lydiate Station Road for the Cheshire Lines event and the car park behind Skelmersdale Library for the Tawd Valley Park event. Please wear suitable clothing for the weather and ground conditions.

The Council is also encouraging and supporting Parish Councils and residents across the Borough to organise their own events in their area. A number of Parish Councils have already committed to joining in and there will probably be a community clean up near you.

Community groups and local residents who are organising a clean-up of their local area and require resources such as bin bags and litter pickers can contact Andrew Hill, the Council’s Environmental Protection and Community Safety Manager, by email Street.SceneOfficers@westlancs,gov.uk or on 01695 577177.

Heidi McDougall, Director of Leisure and Environment, said: “A key priority in the Council Plan is to be ambitious for our environment and its cleanliness. Working together can make a real contribution in tackling litter issues and improving the quality of the environment. These activities will demonstrate there are many who care passionately about this issue and are prepared to support their community.”
