ILLUME – from Skelmersdale to Preston

0

On the 31st August 2019 Glassball will be touring public artworks from their ILLUME Skelmersdale project to the Lancashire Archives in Preston. During the event, which will run from 3-7pm, visitors can view and hear pieces of work installed throughout the building, but in particular the central open courtyard space, something County Architect Roger Booth factored into his original design, ’The remainder of the accommodation is planned round this core at first-floor level, leaving the ground floor podium level clear to be used as a possible open exhibition space.’ (Extract from Lancashire County Council, County Architect’s Report discussing the design of the Lancashire Archives building 1971). Roger Booth and his colleagues designed several buildings, including the library, swimming baths, schools and police station in Skelmersdale.

During the event projections of rarely seen images of Skelmersdale, both digital and analogue, will be found around the building space, along with an ever evolving ADF audio installation in collaboration with musician Simon Tong, Glassball and residents from the town. There will be a chance to view original archive material from Skelmersdale’s new town development and tours of the strong room will also be taking place.

PLEASE NOTE A FREE 16 SEATER MINI BUS WILL DEPART FROM SKEM (BACK OF THE BATHS) AT 2:15PM TO THE ARCHIVES IN PRESTON. THE MINI BUS WILL DEPART FROM PRESTON AT 6PM TO RETURN TO SKEM FOR 6:45PM. ILLUME is a three year public arts project funded by Arts Council England and Lancashire County Council, devised and delivered by artists from Glassball. The project has been bringing into view and responding to selected images from several thousand glass slides donated from Lancashire Archives. These previously unseen images document the beginning of the new town and the subsequent years before the Skelmersdale Development Corporation ceased to operate. To find out more about the project, please go to www.illume.org.uk.
