Ormskirk Ladies Rugby Club did a recruitment drive on Saturday and they enlisted the help of two local Councillors. The County Councillor for Ormskirk, Nikki Hennessy and the Deputy Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council, Cllr Yvonne Gagen. Yvonne also holds the position of Cabinet Member for Leisure Services.

Councillor Nikki Hennessy said ‘I was delighted to be asked to come along to the early morning session. I must admit I didn’t know what I was letting myself in for but I showed up in the rain, the weather was miserable but the company certainly was not. The Ladies were very friendly and I soon felt as if I was back doing my army service! Burpees, sit ups and shuttle runs were all done with a groan and a laugh. The camaraderie was great. No one was left behind or felt awkward. Both me and Yvonne turned 60 last year so I think it shows that even at 60 you can still join in.

‘I want to thank all the team for making us feel so welcome in particularly my daughter Sophia Hennessy for delivering the session and to the Team Captain Sophie Rogers for the great job she does in supporting the team.’

Councillor Gagen added ‘It’s a long time since I did a training session like that and it brought memories back of my football career and the gruelling training camps in Cardiff when I played for Wales. This session focused on various exercises that certainly got your heart beating faster, a great way to improve your fitness even if you are not into rugby you would find these sessions enjoyable. The girls were all very friendly, a great atmosphere and it didn’t matter what level of fitness you have everyone supported each other. I for one will be going again.

‘I worked hard for many years as a Sports Development Manager promoting girls and women in sport. I feel very passionate that girls and women should be equally represented across all sports.

‘Funding for small clubs like Ormskirk Ladies Rugby club rely on funding grants and fund raising events to survive. I will be offering my help to access various funding avenues so this great club can be successful and continue to offer opportunities for girls and women.’

Training sessions take place on a Wednesday at 4pm and Saturday mornings 9 am.
