How many days does it take to change a lightbulb?

One Preston Road, acknowledged as a ‘special case’ for street-lighting in Lancashire, is still waiting for strong enough LED streetlights after a year.  The Council is looking for old-fashioned sodium bulbs to substitute in the meantime.

Larches Lane in Preston is wider than any residential street in the county, and council inspectors admit the LED lights are inadequate for the pavements, borders and road.

A last-minute hitch in the tender process to source stronger LED bulbs has meant residents have to wait until next year for the promised improvement.  The council has offered to replace the existing LED’s with old fashioned ‘yellow’ sodium bulbs in the meantime, but is unclear how many they have in stock.

Resident Mark Livesey, who lives on Larches Lane, said, “I went out with my neighbours and councillors last Halloween, and our low-tech ‘shadow test’ revealed what Lancashire County Council have since acknowledged – the lights aren’t bright enough.  We were looking forward for new bulbs in time for the clocks changing.  I am gutted.”

County Councillor for Preston South West, which includes Larches, Gillian Oliver says: “The council has come back after a year of thinking about this with a jumble sale solution: they will bring back the old bulbs, as and when we can find them in Lancashire County Council’s shed.  This isn’t good enough for the people of Larches, and it matters for the safety of pedestrians and drivers.”

The latest estimate is that new LED bulbs won’t be in place on Larches Lane until 2019.
