Hospitals set to celebrate almost 600 apprentices in health and care across Lancashire and South Cumbria during National Apprenticeship Week

The contribution that more than 600 apprentices working in NHS and social care in Lancashire and South Cumbria make is set to be celebrated as part of the 11th National Apprenticeship Week,  which will run from 5 to 9 March 2018.

In five of the NHS trusts in Lancashire and South Cumbria, there are currently 598 apprentices working in a variety of roles that range from health and wellbeing support and pharmacy support workers to cyber security and engineering. These include Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Apprenticeships are available to people of all ages making them a great option for anyone looking to change their career path or improve their skills. Trusts in Lancashire and South Cumbria are committed to providing alternative opportunities to college and university to help people develop in to long-term successful careers, whilst training on the job.

In addition to the NHS, roles such as healthcare assistants, assistant practitioners and student nurses apprentices are being recruited by social care providers.

During the week employers and apprentices will come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging even more people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career. Across the region organisations will be holding a number of events and opportunities to hear from their current apprentices.

The NHS is committed to recruiting staff with the right skills, experience and knowledge in order to deliver high quality care for people in Lancashire and south Cumbria.

Dr Amanda Doyle, GP and Chief Officer for Healthier Lancashire and South Cumbria, said: “There are a considerable number of opportunities within the health and care workforce that go beyond traditional roles of doctors and nurses. This is demonstrated by our current apprentices working in roles related to public relations, IT, business, finance and medical engineering in addition to healthcare and nursing.

“There is a wide range of support on offer by health and care organisations in Lancashire and South Cumbria during National Apprenticeships Week for talented people in our region to access careers in health and care. These roles contribute to developing a workforce for the future.”
