A unique and historic time capsule buried over 130 years ago on the opening day of Haydock Cottage Hospital is back on permanent display in Haydock Library.

Containing two annual reports of the hospital – which was founded to treat miners across the area – as well as a copy of the Earlestown Guardian newspaper, the glass time capsule became the current land owner’s on purchase of the land.

However, after successful discussions led by local ward councillor Martin Bond last year, Mr Jabrow kindly agreed to hand over the time capsule, along with the hospital entrance arch and foundation stone laid in 1886, so it can be permanently displayed in Haydock for residents, and family members of those miners who helped fund the hospital, to see.

Haydock ward councillors, Martin Bond, Anthony Burns and Jeanette Banks joined library staff, including Library Service Manager Kathryn Boothroyd – and former miners at Haydock Library recently where the time capsule was officially unveiled to the public.

Councillor Bond said: “I am absolutely delighted that, through the generosity of Mr Jabrow, we can ensure that the memory of the Cottage Hospital lives on in Haydock.

“I come from a mining family and am profoundly conscious of what we owe to our forebears, who put life and limb at risk every day of their working lives.

“Now that the pit heads have gone, the time capsule and decorative masonry from the Cottage Hospital will take pride of place in Haydock, so that future generations can learn the story of how and why the hospital came into being.”

Councillor Anthony Burns, who is also St Helens Council’s portfolio holder for libraries, added: “As not only the council’s cabinet member for libraries, but also as a local ward councillor who has the honour of representing the people of Haydock, it’s fantastic to see this fascinating piece of our borough’s history on display in a local library.

“This time capsule, along with the original arch and foundation stone which are displayed on Clipsey Lane, is a fitting way of preserving the heritage of Haydock Cottage Hospital and I’d encourage anyone with an interest in local history to pay Haydock Library a visit to see it.”

The time capsule is available to view during Haydock Library’s opening hours which are: 10:00am-7:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; 1:00pm-7:00pm on a Friday – and Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm.
