Heritage Day returns to Wigan

Trencherfield Mill will be transformed into a hub of culture as the annual Heritage Day celebrations return.

Organised by Trencherfield Mill Residents Association in partnership with Wigan Council, the event will be held on Monday 7th May, 10am-4pm, with a number of activities taking place across the mill site.

Visitors will have the opportunity to go on a Kittywake cruise, enjoy vocal performances from the highly anticipated ‘Beyond Wigan Pier’ musical, experience fairground rides and much more.

There will also be plenty of food on offer from pizza to traditional sweets and iconic Wigan duo, Chonkinfeckle, will provide musical entertainment.

And, to celebrate 110 years since the mill opened, the infamous steam engine will be open to visitors throughout the day and the whistle will be sounded twice, once at 11am and again at 2pm.

Donna Hall, chief executive of Wigan Council and lead officer for arts and culture in Greater Manchester said: “Heritage Day is always a successful and vibrant day with so much to offer.

“We’re committed to supporting community events and we’re proud of how local people come together to enhance the borough’s cultural offer.

“Heritage Day is a celebration of the town’s past and present and is a great way to inspire future generations to learn more about the character of where they live.”

Although the event is free, there is a small charge if visitors would like to see the mill engine.

There will also be a number of classic cars on display next to the mill and Pemberton Morris Dancing Group will also put on a performance.

Dave King, from the residents’ association said: “We’re really excited for Heritage Day and have worked hard to bring together a wide variety of activities and performances to appeal to all.

“With only a couple of weeks to go, we’re keen to spread the message far and wide about what’s on offer and look forward to seeing families and residents on the day.”
