Residents can help shape the future of Wigan Borough and meet new people at Wigan Council’s first ever hackathon.
The Deal Hackathon is being hosted by Leigh Hackspace and will put power in the hand of those who attend to say what differences they want to see in their community.
A hackathon is a an open informal software development day which brings together residents with hi-tech experts who can then share ideas about what problems communities face, such as how to find out about volunteering options, and then work together on using technology to find a solution such as creating smartphone apps where people can find out more.
The free event is part of the #DigitalWigan strategy which is designed to help improve the use of technology for all across the borough and help make life easier for residents.
This is the chance for those who may have ideas on what could make a difference to come forward and pitch their views across. No knowledge of technology is needed for those attending as experts will be on hand to offer solutions.
And the council’s commitment to creating a digital borough has been recognised by being shortlisted for the LGC Digital Council of the Year award.
Councillor Terry Halliwell, portfolio holder for service transformation, said: “We want to hear your views on what we can do to make a difference for the community you live in. We are a council which prides itself on using innovative technology and this event will be a first for us but we hope it will have a lasting impact on the way we deliver services in the future as part of The Deal.”
The full weekend event will run at Leigh Hackspace, Unit F1, The Cotton Mill, Mather Lane on 5th and 6th March. The event will run from 9am to 5pm each day and free lunch will be provided to those who attend.
