Halton Borough Council issue warning about HSBC scam

0

Officers from Halton Borough Council have issued a warning to residents after a scam or ‘phishing’ email which pretending that it was sent from HSBC Bank was sent to a resident in Widnes.

The email sent by the scammers included links to the genuine HSBC website in the ‘Important Notes’, Privacy Statement’, ‘Get Safe Online’ and also the website address which was given at the end of the email in an effort to make it look authentic.

Council Trading Standards Officers had advised that it is possible to tell that this is not a genuine email because:

1. Although it displays a ‘From’ HSBC the email address that it is actually sent from does not belong to HSBC: dlkb@ptd.net
2. The language is strange which would indicate that it is a poor translation into English
3. When you hover the mouse over the HSBC online link you see that the website address the link goes to does not belong to HSBC

If you receive a similar email to this from any bank or official organisation, then you should not follow any of the included links in the email but you should instead contact them using their published number.
