A partnership of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL), Health Education England and Edge Hill University are delighted to announce that its pioneering training programme has been shortlisted for a HSJ Value Award.

An esteemed judging panel comprising of a diverse range of highly regarded figures across the NHS and wider healthcare sector were left impressed with the achievements and ongoing work of the partnership’s comprehensive surgical master’s programme (MCh & MMed), the largest of its kind in the England.

Around 350 doctors have already obtained a masters degree through this programme, providing a unique opportunity for British and overseas doctors to work full-time in the NHS, as well as working towards achieving an academic qualification.

Last year, the organisations introduced a nursing arm, operating in a similar manner, with an expected 100 nurses to gain accreditation, with plans to expand in line with government policy.

Professor Raj Murali, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at WWL, who introduced the programme back in 2004, said: “We are over the moon to have been shortlisted for a HSJ Value Award, recognising our MCh programme which has seen an incredible partnership go from strength to strength.

“The NHS is the crown jewel health system in the world but with the current shortage of junior staff this scheme provides an excellent supply of competent trainees who benefit from the best clinical training in the world and at the same time ensuring that the high quality health care is not compromised.

“With 35 Trusts now on board – making it the largest of its kind in the country – it’s testament to the way the programme operates, providing a positive impact on both patient healthcare and introducing new NHS staff.

“With our non-EU links, the programme has reached out to several countries, with programme leaders regularly travelling to the Indian subcontinent, and more recently Egypt, where we interviewed hundreds of doctors and nurses.

“This nomination has been a tremendous boost to both to our team and I am sure it will bolster our continued efforts to improve.”

The programme also has the support of the British International Doctors Association (BIDA), the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) and the Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership.

Associate Dean of Edge Hill University’s Faculty of Health Social Care and Medicine, Professor Clare Austin, said: “We are enormously proud of the MCh/MMed suite of programmes Edge Hill has to offer and are delighted to be nominated for such an award – a real testament to the fantastic partnership and support of colleagues throughout the region.

“We are proud of the contribution students make to the NHS during their time in the UK, and the excellent training and support they receive from both our clinical and academic colleagues, which enables them to impact positively on patient experience and outcomes in other countries, equipped with enhanced skills, knowledge and behaviours.”

Alastair McLellan, HSJ editor added: “We would like to congratulate the partnership of WWL, Health Education England and Edge Hill University on being nominated ahead of the HSJ Value Awards 2020.

“We are looking forward to welcoming them to the ceremony in May, to join us in recognising the very best NHS teams and projects in the healthcare sector. This year’s finalists are of an outstanding calibre and all of them are exceptionally dedicated to enhancing healthcare across the UK.”

The partnership has been shortlisted in the People & Organisational Development Initiative of the Year category.

The winners will be selected following a rigorous “live panel” judging stage ahead of the HSJ Value Awards 2020 awards ceremony, to be held at Manchester Central on 21 May 2020.
