Get online at your local library

Lancashire County Council is inviting people of all ages to log on at their local library for national Get Online Week.

The theme of the campaign this year, which runs from 14 to 20 October, is Get More Out Of Life Online. During the week, libraries across the county will focus on helping people to improve their online skills and get to grips with the internet. The event is organised by the Good Things Foundation.

People will be supported to develop or to improve their digital ability and discover how the internet can make their lives a little easier.

There will be sessions for beginners in libraries across the county, where they will be supported by staff to take their next steps and build their skills. Confident users will be able to learn more and advance their skills.

Whether it’s job-hunting, trying to get healthy, connecting with friends and family, or simply shopping for a bargain, getting online can help people to make the most of life.

Those taking part will also be able to find out more about the Lancashire Digital Library, which features free download of eBooks and eAudiobooks and BorrowBox. There will be access to the complete online reference library, with free access to resources such as the World Book Encyclopedia, the driving theory test and the NewsBank world news archive.

People will be able to learn how to use social media, to send emails, and create documents and spreadsheets.

Now in its 12th year, Get Online Week has already helped thousands of people to discover how the internet can make their lives a little easier.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “Although many local people enjoy the benefits of using the internet, there are still many adults in Lancashire who have never been online.

“Get Online Week offers a superb opportunity for people to get familiar with modern technology and start enjoying all the advantages of life online.

“Digital skills are increasingly important in every aspect of our lives, from job opportunities, education and entertainment, to using services and shopping.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’ll be getting online for the first time or looking to learn more. I would really encourage anyone to go along to one of the friendly sessions at your local library and start getting online, and maybe do more with your skills.

“Although it can feel pretty scary getting started, we’re here to help you and there’s lots of support available.”

People do not need to have an iPad or tablet to sign up to one of the courses, but if they do have one, it would help if they take it along to a session.

People can just turn up at their local library and take part for free.
