A popular North West fun run series returns to Wirral this weekend with organisers pledging to donate profits from the first event of 2022 to the Ukraine Emergency Appeal.

The Medal Muddle 5K returns after an enforced break of two years due to the pandemic. The event is organised and staged by independent race event organisers BTR Liverpool.

This year’s first Medal Muddle takes place on Saturday (23 April) in Hoylake, starting at 11am.

The start is opposite the community centre on Hoyle Road. The out and back route will take participants along Hoylake Promenade towards Moreton and back to Hoylake.

Participants are encouraged to wear Ukraine’s national colours of blue and yellow to show their support.

The 5K is a fun run and not competitive, so there will be no official timing. Entry is £12. Online entries close at midnight on Thursday (21 April). There will be on the day entries from the BTR enquiries tent at the start line.

The Medal Muddle series was created by BTR as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability. Surplus race T-shirts and medals from across the BTR event portfolio are repurposed and rebranded, and presented to everyone taking part.

The first Medal Muddle was staged in 2019. Staged in conjunction with BTR Road Runners, the small local 5K runs supported local charities and has raised almost £3,000 since it was launched.

Good causes to benefit have already included Hoylake RNLI, Pawprints Wildlife Rescue, Hoylake Animal Rescue, Charles Thompson Mission Birkenhead, and Shy Lowen Horse & Pony Sanctuary.

BTR Liverpool has announced that all profits from April’s Medal Muddle event will be donated to the Ukraine Emergency Appeal – so organisers are encouraging people to get behind the cause.

BTR Liverpool is the leading independent organisation for creating, managing and delivering headline running events across Liverpool City Region. Its extensive portfolio covers various distances across different terrains, all with an ongoing commitment to sustainability.

BTR Liverpool Race Director Alan Rothwell commented:

“The images we are seeing on the news are devastating, you can’t even begin to imagine what these innocent people are going through. Everyone has been rallying round and coming up with ways to do their bit to help – this is ours at BTR. I’d urge people to take part and support this very important cause while wearing blue and yellow in solidarity.

“In recent years we’ve been working hard to move forward with our commitment to sustainability. By repurposing and helping the environment, we can also use the Medal Muddle to raise funds and help support people in their time of need.”

BTR Liverpool recently donated running T-shirts to clothing appeals for the people of Ukraine. Other T-shirt donations have previously included 2,000 T-shirts to the Syrian crisis.
