Free work clubs to help jobseekers throughout Lancashire

Jobseekers can attend a free ‘work club’ in a library close to where they live.

They’ve been made available thanks to close collaboration between Lancashire County Council’s library service and Lancashire Adult Learning.

The clubs, run by teachers from Lancashire Adult Learning, offer advice and support on finding work and training opportunities. They are held in local libraries to make them as accessible as possible.

These three-hour sessions are available for up to six weeks and can also help people with their covering letters and application forms.

Free internet access and professional support are available to help people search for jobs, with advice on education and training also on hand.

Anyone attending the sessions will receive one-to-one advice from the teacher when they arrive to help make the most of their time.

The sessions are free and are open to all adults over 19.

The free online programme, Access to Jobseeker Skills, is also offered and includes guidance on job hunting, interviews and starting work.

People can easily access this service from their library or home by logging in using the number on their library card.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said, “These weekly work clubs are run in libraries, at the heart of the community, so that they are easy to get to. They provide people with advice and support which is totally confidential.

“Anyone ready to apply for work can get help with writing their CV, covering letters and application forms, so that they present themselves as well as possible to a potential employer.

“They can also practise being in an interview situation and get tips to help them with this.

“The Find a Job facility is also available – this helps people to find and apply for the latest jobs, locally, nationally and abroad.

“The work clubs are an opportunity to meet other people, exchange skills, share experiences, find opportunities, make contacts and get help.”

Lancashire Adult Learning’s Head of Curriculum, Nicola Hall said: “Work clubs provide an essential service to those learners who need to develop employability skills, or need support and assistance when applying for jobs. They cater for all unemployed learners, from anyone who is unemployed with multiple barriers to accessing the workplace, to those who just need help with creating a CV.”
