A combined teaching total of 172 years was marked when five members of staff retired from Haydock High School.

Colleagues and pupils said farewell to Dee Griffiths, Jane Valentine, Chris Smaje, Rita Mallison and Margaret Curran.

Head teacher Ian Murphy said: “We will be indebted forever to these remarkable teachers and leaders for their enthusiasm, wisdom, patience and endeavour. They have shaped the experiences and talents of thousands of students at Haydock during their time with us.

“Our best wishes and thanks go with them, and we offer them our sincere gratitude for the chance to have worked with them during their careers. They have each set a tremendous example to us all, and we will strive to ensure that we live up to their legacy in the future. Our thanks and best wishes go to them all.”
