Fantastic Book Awards 2018 launch

0

This year’s Fantastic Book Awards will be launched by children’s authors Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre at the Marriott Hotel, Preston, on Wednesday 19 September.

Over 150 primary schools are expected to attend the official launch of the book awards, developed by Lancashire’s School Library Service.

These awards run until May 2019 and will involve thousands of children from Lancashire primary schools.

The main aim of the awards is to support children aged 9-11 years in reading for pleasure by introducing them to newly-published fiction titles, and encouraging them to meet and discuss these at informal book clubs.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “I’m a firm supporter of this great initiative. Sadly, research shows that interest in reading declines significantly when children move on from primary to secondary school. Hopefully this initiative for children, as they are approaching the end of primary school and moving on to secondary school, will help to address this issue.

“I really enjoyed reading when I was at school, and when I get time I still like to settle down with a good book. We are fully committed to maintaining the high levels and standards of literacy here in Lancashire and I’ll take a keen interest in who’s won next May.”
