Families welcome more affordable housing in Wigan Borough

Young families, couples and professionals are just some of the people who could benefit from a brand new affordable housing scheme in Wigan Borough.

Wigan Council works with Great Places and other partners to deliver affordable housing borough-wide based and this week, the first residents due to move to the old Lowton Civic Hall site were handed their keys.

The development comprises a mix of three and two bed houses available either by shared ownership or through affordable rent with Great Places.

Lauren Gibson, 33, is moving into her new property with husband Matthew, 34 and their two children, Olivia, 3 and Benjamin, 10 months.

She said: “We are so glad to finally have the keys to our new home. Olivia has cerebral palsy, so we needed a house that meets her needs.

“It’s so accessible for Olivia and is conveniently placed for the school we’d like her to attend and the gym she goes to.

“All you ever want is a nice place for your children to grow up and we can imagine living here forever.”

Wigan Council works closely with registered partners to build new affordable homes based on resident need in the local area and since 2016, almost 200 have been built by organisations such as Great Places.

This is in addition to the 375 affordable homes built directly by local authority since 2010.

And, all of the homes are filled with residents searching for housing through the council’s choice-based letting service.

Councillor Terry Halliwell, portfolio holder for housing and welfare at the council said: “We are passionate about delivering new, high quality and affordable homes for people in the borough that are built to the highest standards.

“We have a long and successful relationship with Great Places as we share the same values and they understand the importance of providing a variety of homes for our existing residents and also to attract people to our borough.

“Good quality new housing along with improved transport links and employment opportunities provides the right mix to keep our local economy growing, which is another key priority for us.”

Great Places is a registered housing provider working across the North West and Yorkshire. They work closely with Wigan Council and other partners to deliver vital new homes across the borough of different sizes and tenures.

They developed the Lowton Civic Hall site with MCI Developments, who will also be constructing a new car park close to a neighbouring playing field.

Pete Bojar, executive director of growth and assets at Great Places said: “Working in partnership to offer affordable housing schemes means we can provide options for a range of people, tailored to the needs of the local area.

“It’s great to hear feedback like this about one of the borough’s most recent developments and we look forward to more people moving to the site in the coming weeks.”
