Families with children and young people turned out at Taylor Park with bicycles and helmets on a hunt for chocolate eggs, at a recent event arranged by St Helens Council’s Transport Planning team.

Event-goers met outside the park’s Community Cycle Hub – one of six dotted around the borough – where members of partner organisation Sustrans talked the young people through some basic bike safety and maintenance tips with Dr Bike, and led the cycling convoy on an Easter egg hunt.

Those looking for a healthier option used their pedal power on the smoothie bike – a stationary bike with a blender attached – to make some nutritious and delicious fruit drinks.

In an interesting take on the pedal power idea, residents were able to burn some calories on the disco bikes, trying to generate enough energy to power a music system playing disco tunes.

Meanwhile, attendees had the chance to get their blood pressure checked by Health Trainers from the council’s Healthy Living team and get some handy tips and advice about cycling near or on public roads from the council’s Road Safety team.

Members of The Mersey Forest were also on hand to hear people’s views on a planned regular bike ride at St Helens beauty spot Colliers Moss Common, as part of a joint effort with the council called Nature4Health, which aims to encourage healthy exercise and sustainable use of our natural surroundings.

Don’t worry if you missed out on this great event. There’s a range of free and fun bike rides taking place weekly from Cycle Hubs around the borough:

10.00am-12.00pm Bold Miners Neighbourhood Centre, Fleet Lane, Parr, WA9 4NH
