Everton progress in Cup after defeating Bournemouth 2-0

Everton showed that they had appeared to have learned from their previous match, against West Brom, that having the majority of possession but not making the most of it is not a good idea. While the stats show that possession was shared between the sides almost 50-50, and that the number of shots was almost equal with Bournemouth having 14 to Everton’s 15, the fact that Everton took their chances is what lead to Everton winning the match.

Everton showed that they were taking the Cup seriously and went into the match with an unchanged starting eleven; maybe this had something to do with giving the players a chance to show that they can learn from their mistakes made in their previous game! Everton had an early chance when Lukaku raced forward with the ball, although his pass sent Barkley wider than he would have liked and his resulting shot was easily saved by Federici in the Bournemouth goal. Bournemouth created a chance for Iturbe in the 13th minute, although his left footed shot was sent wide of Robles’ post.

Everton were now starting to control the possession and were beginning to make the better use of the ball. Lukaku almost opened the scoring on the half hour mark after he raced past Daniels although when through on goal he was unable to squeeze the ball under Federici. Bournemouth had an attack shortly after although they were thwarted by a superb sliding tackle from Jagielka.

The scoring probably should have been opened by Bournemouth from the penalty spot, Bournemouth had a corner which was sent over into the Everton area and was then handled by James McCarthy. Daniels stepped up to take the penalty and hit the ball hard and low to Robles’ left, Robles waited as long as he could before choosing a way to dive, this placed a bit of extra pressure on the penalty taker and maybe this led to him not taking the greatest penalty ever. Robles dived to his left and comfortably saved the penalty, as the rebound came back into play Robles was quick to make it back to his feet anticipating the rebound, although Bournemouth failed to capitalise on it as four players gathered on the rebound and could only fire the rebound high and wide of the goal.

Everton continued to create the best of the chances, although they were up to now failing to make the most of them. The scoreline was changed in the 55th minute after Ross Barkley had the ball outside of the Bournemouth area and sent in a shot towards goal, the shot had not gone very far when it took a deflection off the foot of Dan Gosling and then looped up and over Federici to put Everton 1-0 ahead. There was a little luck about the goal; although it was probably deserved giving that Everton had been creating the better chances. Everton thought that they had increased their lead shortly after when they had the ball in the net only to see Lukaku’s effort ruled out for offside.

Everton’s fans could sense that the game was there for them to win, although there were still chances created by Bournemouth. Bournemouth had a freekick which was taken by Stanislas, the freekick deflected off Lukaku and wrong-footed Robles, however the ball spun wide of the post to leave the score at 1-0. Dan Gosling had a great chance to level the scores but his headed effort went straight to Robles.

Everton nearly increased their lead when Barkley was fed the ball and fired in a shot; his shot was deflected wide and went for a corner. The corner was taken by Oviedo and was flicked on by Gareth Barry, the flick on was met by Lukaku who fired home the ball from close range to double the lead for Everton. Everton now had a comfortable lead and they never really had any worries of Bournemouth getting back into the game.

There was an improvement in this game in comparison to the game against West Brom, and hopefully the lessons learned will be remembered for the remainder of the season and that Everton will be making the most of their chances for what remains of the season.

Everton had a few players in contention for the man of the match nomination, Ross Barkley once again had a good game and scored a good goal, he once again showed that he will be a big influence on the upcoming years at Goodison. Joel Robles had a good game in goal for Everton, and once again he brought a calmness and confidence to the defence. However the man of the match award needs to go to Gareth Barry. While he may not be to most eye-catching of players, Barry goes about his game with the experience of a seasoned professional and allows the players around him to go ahead with their own game. As well as allowing those around him to play their own game, he was also instrumental in setting up the crucial second goal for Everton.
