Don't let your world go up in smoke

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS) is urging people to take fire safety precautions in the home to stay safe. There are simple steps all of us can take to protect our loved ones and reduce the risk of fire.

Fires in the home can often be prevented and having safety measures in place can reduce the risk of injury if a fire does occur. We are encouraging residents to ensure they have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fitted, establish a bedtime routine and escape plan to be prepared in the event of a fire and to take particular care when cooking.

These messages are informed by key insights from incident data which tells us that:

  • People are eight times more likely to die in a fire at home if they do not have a working smoke alarm.
  • Most fires that result in injury or death occur at night.
  • Around half of fires in the home are caused by cooking accidents.
  • Every six days someone dies from a fire caused by a cigarette.

Personalised fire safety advice is available to everyone who signs up for a home fire safety check. LFRS can offer vital safety help, advice and solutions, as well as help from a range of organisations. By registering for a home fire safety check, people can explore whether they – along with loved ones or neighbours – could be at greater risk from fire.

You can register online here: www.lancsfirerescue.org.uk/homefiresafety or call 0800 169 1125.
