Diggers given go ahead for Skelmersdale town centre as multi million pound investment approved

West Lancashire Borough Council voted through recommendations on Wednesday night to drive forward with the physical delivery of Skelmersdale Town Centre.

At a meeting of the Full Council, councillors voted to delegate authority to the Director of Development and Regeneration “to take all necessary steps to enable a Phase 1 scheme to proceed”.

This vote comes on the back of the council securing £2 million in funding from the Lancashire Enterprise Fund (LEP) Growth Fund, which will be spent solely on the Skelmersdale Town Centre project.

Council has also allocated £100,000 from the Strategic Investment Reserve to cover any additional legal and other project expenses.

Council Leader Cllr Ian Moran said:

“For many years now we have been promised the delivery of Skelmersdale Town Centre, but I along with thousands of others across the town have been frustrated at the length of time we have had to wait, however, having secured the funding and the planning permission, I am pleased that councillors across the chamber agreed to fund the eventual delivery.

“We have worked hard to get to this point, despite many false dawns in the past, and with the £2 million pound secured from the Lancashire Enterprise it is now time to get the construction of Skelmersdale Town Centre under way.

“With the plans for the total replacement of the ageing Nye Bevan Swimming Pool on track through our leisure centre investment, this really is a historic moment for Skelmersdale, and together the pool, the town centre and recent housebuilding will all help towards the business case for Skelmersdale train station.

“I look forward to seeing the building work under way in the coming months and delivering these projects that we as a town deserve and is long overdue.”

The first phase of the development will include new builds, anchor outlets already confirmed, including Lidl and B&M.
