At a meeting of Full Council on Wednesday 16 October 2019, Skelmersdale North Councillor Neil Furey was appointed as the new Chair the Council’s Audit and Governance Committee. The appointment was not supported by opposition groups Our West Lancashire and the Conservatives.
Skelmersdale North Councillor Neil Furey commented:
“I am delighted to be appointed Chair of the Council’s Audit and Governance Committee. I have previously chaired other committee meetings and I am grateful for the trust shown in me by the Leader of the Council and my Labour Group colleagues. However I was disappointed with the comments made by opposition Councillors from Anti-Student Lobby Group, Our West Lancashire. I have worked on Committee meetings for the last 12 years and have carried out my duties to a very high standard. As Chair of a committee it is my role to ensure we examine carefully decisions made by this Council and scrutinise policies of the Council. As Chair of a committee I am not ‘party whipped’ and neither are other members of the committee.”
Skelmersdale North Councillor Neil Furey continued:
“It has taken opposition Councillors some 4 years to discover scrutiny and they clearly have a lot to learn. Choosing a Chair of a committee meeting is not scrutiny. It is what work is done by members on the committee that counts. As the new Chair of the Audit & Governance Committee I will ensure our work is carried out correctly and I will allow all members to have input into our deliberations. I intend to make full use of my experience and skills in contributing to our Council Services. In addition to delivering our priorities to transform our town centres, build new leisure centres and affordable housing.”
“I expect Our West Lancashire will continue with their priorities to campaign against students and broken bin lids.”
