Couch to 5K is child’s play

A generous donation of toys has been made to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Rainbow Ward from a local primary school.

Students, staff, and parents from Westfield Community School in Pemberton laced up their running shoes to take part in a Couch to 5k course.

Taking part in the programme was initially suggested by a parent at a coffee morning and the school saw this as a great opportunity to promote both physical and mental wellbeing.

Students, staff, parents and even grandparents took part in the active challenge which saw them meet every Monday, including school holidays.

And at the end of the programme a special presentation was held at the school to present students with medals from their head-teacher.

The money raised by participants has now been split between Rainbow Ward and The Christie Charity.

Pupils visited Rainbow Ward at the Trust’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary with Mrs Pennington, Pastoral Manager at Westfield, to donate the toys which included dinosaurs, trains, action figures, and even a sandpit.

Nicky Crowther, Play Specialist on Rainbow Ward, thanked the school for their donation saying: “Taking part in a 5k is a huge achievement but to do this and raise money for two worthy causes shows how caring the school is.

“Being in hospital isn’t easy for anyone, especially children, but toys like these help to bring fun and a smile to their faces and make the experience that much easier.”

The donation certainly doesn’t mark the end of the group’s sporty fundraising as they’ve also taken part in a Poppy Run to raise money for the Royal British Legion.
