The Chorley Grand Prix will have a new winner in 2018 after retaining two time champion Ian Bibby was selected in England’s Commonwealth games road cycling team.

Local cyclist Bibby, who won the first ever Chorley Grand Prix and also last year’s race, will be jetting off to the Gold Coast at the beginning of April meaning he is unable to defend his title on Sunday 15 April.

The JLT Condor star is naturally delighted with his England selection “To be selected to compete for England at the Commonwealth Games is a massive honour and achievement.

“It will be an excellent experience and great to be part of such a strong England cycling squad. Hopefully we can continue our good form and bring back a medal”

Selection of course meant that defending his Chorley Grand Prix title was out of the question but he will still be supporting the race.

The 2017 National Road Championship bronze medallist said “The Chorley Grand Prix has been great for me. I was proud to win the first ever race and to have won it twice is fantastic with it being so local to me. Hopefully a JLT Condor rider can come out on top in this year’s event.

“The course has everything including the tough climb up through Rivington which has helped me in both my victories having the inside knowledge. The support around the course is also fantastic with the decorated bikes and how many people line the route all help to make it a fantastic event.

Rebecca Huddleston, Director at Chorley Council, said: “We wish to congratulate Ian on his England selection and wish him well for the Commonwealth Games. His selection for the Gold Coast after twice winning the Chorley Grand Prix just shows the calibre of competitors that are on show in the event.

“The Chorley Grand Prix is an amazing spectacle that puts Chorley well and truly on the map as a destination for cycling. We want to build on the success of previous years by making this year’s event even bigger and attracting even more spectators to cheer on the cyclists as they make their way around our challenging course.”

The Chorley Grand Prix takes place on Sunday 15 April, with a 11am start from Park Road in the town centre before the cyclists take on a five lap, 115 mile route through Chorley, Limbrick, Rivington, Belmont, Abbey Village, Withnell, Brinscall, Wheelton, Buckshaw Village and back to Chorley
