Civil liberties MEPs to debate how return to death penalty could hurt EU status

0

The possible effects of an EU member state decision to reintroduce the death penalty, including those on its rights and status as a member state, will be debated in the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday at 16.30.

The debate was prompted by the Conference of Presidents’ decision of 30 April to ask the Civil Liberties Committee to examine the issue “as a matter of urgency”. At the meeting President Schulz and political group leaders discussed the recent statement by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán about a possible restoration of the death penalty there.

Ms Paraskevi MICHOU, acting Director General of DG Justice, will represent the European Commission in the debate.
