Children’s author to host creative writing workshops in libraries

Budding writers can discover how to bring their stories alive at creative writing workshops held by children’s author, Mark Powers, as part of this year’s St Helens Super Writers competition

A number of workshops will be held in libraries across the borough this month to support budding young writers taking part in this year’s St Helens Super Writers, 2019.

Run by children’s author Mark Powers – known for the ‘Spy Toys’ book series – the workshops entitled ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ will encourage participants to bring their writing alive through the use of vivid description, an effective way – as Mark puts it – of making a story “spring off the page.”

The workshops have been set up to inspire primary and secondary school-aged children and young people of St Helens taking part in the library service’s annual fun and exciting creative writing competition, with book vouchers up to the value of £50 up for grabs.

Workshops will be held throughout the day of Wednesday 10 April in the libraries listed below:

Haydock Library – 10:00am

Parr Library – 11:30am

Eccleston Library – 2:00pm

Billinge Library – 3:30pm

Places are limited at these workshops and booking is essential. To book your place please email karenthornburn@sthelens.gov.uk or ring 01744 677446.

The deadline for this year’s St Helens Super Writers – for which the theme is focused on the environment to highlight the Year of Green Action – is Saturday 27 April 2019.

Entries can be returned to any St Helens library or by email to: karenthornburn@sthelens.gov.uk. Please make sure your entries are clearly marked with your name, age, address and school.
