The prestigious West Lancashire Open Exhibition was unveiled to the public on Saturday 11 July. The Chapel Gallery has brought together a collection of vibrant works by accomplished artists from across the UK.
The gallery, which is run by West Lancashire Borough Council, hosts its annual Open Exhibition until September 9. It’s a celebration of colour, technique and imagination and gives visitors the chance to see a broad variety of inspiring works created by talented individuals in a wide range of media.
If you’re interested in developing an art collection, the Open Exhibition is a great way to source original artworks to suit all budgets as pieces range from small scale watercolours, prints and photography to large scale contemporary oil paintings, 3D works and textiles. It is a truly diverse exhibition with something for everyone to enjoy.
Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “This is a challenging time for the arts so the fact that this exhibition continues to develop from strength to strength is testament to the passion and commitment of the artists exhibited. Visitors will find work from established professionals through to students and amateurs with ambition.”
All the works were judged by guest selectors including Tracy Hill and Nathan Pendlebury, who are both established artists and curators. Together the selection panel has chosen almost 150 artworks for exhibition in the light and open space of the Chapel Gallery.
Several works of art received commendations and the overall winners were:
- Joint Third Prize £200 (£100 each):Steph Shipley, Of Other Spaces #2, Solar Plate Etching and Alan Smith, Island on Lock Eilt, Analogue Silver Print Photograph
- Second Prize £400:Jason Thompson, Melody Showed Me Blossfeldt, Enamel Paint and Varnish on Board
- First Prize £800:Arthur Roberts, Winter 2014/15 (Cadium Yellow), Acrylic and Graphite on Wood
The Open is one of the gallery’s most popular exhibitions, where there is something for everyone to enjoy. This exhibition offers an excellent opportunity for any would be art collectors as the artworks can be purchased at very reasonable prices. Also is on view is a showcase of sixteen students artwork from the West Lancashire College Art & Design department.
Students at the College have the opportunity to experiment with an extraordinarily broad range of art techniques and processes, and as they progress, investigate themes and ideas which are personal to themselves. The work seen here is a very small sample taken from a number of projects often based on traditional art themes or on the work of certain artists.
The artwork is an eclectic mix that demonstrates a range of skills and understandings of the different mediums portrayed, to provide an interesting and innovative showcase.
