Celebrate Heritage Open Days in Preston

0

Lancashire County Council’s historic buildings in Preston will be opening their doors on Saturday 8 September to celebrate an annual heritage event encouraging people to find out more about their local history.

Heritage Open Days are an opportunity for people to explore their heritage, architecture and culture by visiting an attraction, or by getting involved in a number of activities or events.

There will be free admission to the venues over the weekend, with specially arranged events.

Activities include behind the scenes tours of both the Lancashire Archives and the Lancashire Conservation Studios, previously known as St. Mary’s Church.

The tours at the archives will give people the chance to take a look behind the scenes at the nine miles of treasured documents, records, archives and photographs. There will be a chance to watch conservation demonstrations and visit the strongroom. The tours will take place at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm. Each tour will take approximately 45 minutes and you can just turn up – there is no need to book.

Visitors will also get the chance to listen to a talk about the life and work of Preston suffragette, Edith Rigby. These talks are available at 10.15am, 12.15pm and 2.15pm. Places are limited, but you can just turn up – there is no need to book.

An exhibition of photographs, banners and personal papers belonging to suffrage campaigners from Lancashire who helped women to gain the vote 100 years ago will also be available.

Refreshments will be available at Lancashire Archives, as Café Archive will be open for visitors to enjoy. Café Archive has been set up with the support of the Friends of Lancashire Archives and volunteers.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to take part in Heritage Open Days, either by visiting an attraction, or taking part in an event.

“There’s certainly a good choice available, to suit all ages and tastes.”

Tours of Lancashire Conservation studios, where historic objects are cleaned and restored, will be available.

Visitors to the Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library will be able to tour the building and visit the Egyptian balcony, or enjoy a virtual tour. There will also be a display entitled ‘local women of substance’ and an Edith Rigby puppet workshop and show.

Some of the venues taking part in Preston are:
• Lancashire Archives, Bow Lane, Preston
• Lancashire Conservation Studios, Stanley Street, Preston
• The Harris Museum, Art Gallery and Library, Market Square, Preston
