A CCTV image has been released by police of a man who is suspected of stealing £300 from a 79 year old woman in Wigan. At about 2:25pm on Friday 27th May 2016, the victim had been withdrawing money from an ATM outside Lloyds TSB on Market Street, Wigan, when she has been approached by a man.

The man has distracted the woman, and while her attention had been diverted from the machine he has stolen £300 from her account without her realising.

The offender had been wearing black trainers, grey tracksuit bottoms, a green parka coat and black Nike cap.

Police Community Support Officer Debbie Alty said ‘This poor woman was left significantly out of pocket by an opportunist thief who targeted her while she was using the cash machine. The offender is highly likely to offend again, and as a result we would like anyone who recognises the man in this image to come forward and speak to police.

‘Perpetrators of crimes such as this tend to target elderly and vulnerable victims while they are alone in the town centre, and even a momentary lapse of concentration can cost the victims hundreds of pounds. We would advise members of the public to be aware of your surroundings, and be vigilant for such fraudsters when they are using an ATM machine.’

Anybody who has got any information has been asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident number 270516/1378 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
