A new road connecting Carrwood Road in Walton-le-Dale to The Cawsey in Penwortham has opened today (Tuesday 4 August).

The link road and bridge was built by Morris Homes as part of their development located off The Cawsey.

This new section of road has been adopted by Lancashire County Council. The county council, with support from South Ribble Council, has made a number of safety improvements to Carrwood Road.

These include widening and extending the pavements to make it easier for both pedestrians and cyclists to use Carrwood Road, installing a new toucan crossing at the junction of Carrwood Road with the Old Tram Road cycle route, and cutting back the trees and shrubs along the length of Carrwood Road to improve visibility.

The toucan crossing is the final piece of work. Following testing over the last few days, the road can now be opened.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, deputy leader and cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The Cross Borough Link Road will make it much easier for people to get between the Walton-le-Dale and Penwortham areas and provide an alternative route for local residents.

“This link will also help to ease traffic congestion in the area, especially at Tardy Gate.

“The pavement extensions and Toucan Crossing will make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians travelling along Carrwood Road and the popular Old Tram Road.

“I’m pleased this work is now complete.”

  1. This hasn’t solved the traffic it’s just moved it to another area. Todd Lane North has now gone from a quiet lane to a busy road overnight. It’s horrendous, the traffic is non stop, speeding motorists using it as a rat run plus an extremely noisy road surface. All I can hear inside my house is the constant roar of traffic. Plus now we have the added air pollution to contend with too. Maybe the powers that be should be looking at the effect the opening of this road is now having on other areas and how it’s affecting the quality of life for its residents
