Local care workers who have been in the front line supporting some of the borough’s most vulnerable will receive full sick pay if they are required to self-isolate.

Whilst Wigan Council staff have received full sick pay in the event of having to self-isolate due to COVID-19, many staff with the wider care sector have only received government statutory sick pay from their employers.

As part of an initiative from Wigan Council demonstrating a commitment to all staff providing these vital frontline care services, all care workers will now also receive full sick pay in those same circumstances.

They will also receive backdated sick pay for COVID-19 related sickness absences.

Welcoming the news, deputy leader of Wigan Council, Councillor Keith Cunliffe, said: “Our carers within care homes and other adult social care settings have been on the frontline of this pandemic from day one, helping to protect our most vulnerable residents, while putting themselves at risk.

“It’s right that they receive full pay if they have to stay off work due to COVID-19 issues to continue protecting residents and I’m pleased we’ve been able to make this happen.”

This scheme, along with the improved testing regime in the borough and a range of other support measures will help to reduce the spread of infection in care homes by ensuring care workers are not penalised financially if they have to be at home to protect others.
