Can you help the Council with information about a World War Two veteran?

0

West Lancashire Borough Council is appealing for information which could lead to the name of a World War Two veteran being added to a local War Memorial.

A public consultation has been launched by the Council after the Burscough and Lathom Branch of the Royal British Legion contacted the authority about Private Sydney Turner, who died during the Second World War.

Branch members have told the authority that Private Turner was born on the 30 June 1915 and lived his early life in Square Lane, Burscough. His mother Ruth, died in 1928 and his father David in 1936. In later life, possibly after his parents had died, he lived with his sister Hilda in Ravenscroft Avenue, Ormskirk.

Private Turner enlisted in May 1940 into the Kings Own Territorial Army and was on active service in Tunisia, North Africa. According to official records he was killed in action, on 28 November 1942.

The Council is proposing to put Private Turner’s name on the Ormskirk War Memorial as he was living in the Ormskirk area when he enlisted.

Under its protocol for war memorials the Council has to hold a public consultation on the matter in an attempt to find information to further support the application and the information provided. If you believe you can provide the Council with information about Private Turner, please write to: Ian Bond, Heritage and Environment Manager, West Lancashire Borough Council, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk, L39 2DF. Or you can email ian.bond@westlancs.gov.uk. The consultation starts on Thursday 2 February and will run until Thursday 2 March.

Councillor John Hodson, portfolio holder for Planning, said: “The Council understands it is very important to properly remember the fallen service men and women who have given their lives serving their country. In doing so we want to make sure that the existing names honoured on our war memorial are correct.

“We are therefore asking for help and consulting with the wider community in order to confirm the details we have are correct. We are also looking to see if there are any relatives of Private Turner still living in the area who could help further collaborate the information we currently have.”
