1874 Northwich 3 Skelmersdale United 1
Skelmersdale United’s return to league action saw a visit to 1874 Northwich with the hosts claiming a 3-1 win on Tuesday evening.
Paul McNally handed a first start of the season to Tom Grimshaw while Alex Davies also came into the starting eleven. The hosts started the brighter with Jake Parker sweeping a shot over the bar inside two minutes.
United responded with a couple of good ataccks that ended with swings of the flag due to offside but their first chance of the evening came on 19 minutes as Danny Mitchley curled a shot past the post.
Lloyd Ellams saw a free-kick saved by Tony Aghayere before Ben Barnes denied Ashley Woods from close range at the other end. United were given a great chance to open the scoring on 27 minutes as Ryan Mitchell upended Mitchley and the referee awarded a penalty. Emini Adegbenro stepped up and slotted past Aghayere to make it 1-0 with his seventh goal of the season.
Skem could have doubled the lead just two minutes later as Alex Griffith’s corner found Alex Davies free at the far post who shot at goal only to be denied by a superb last-gasp clearance from Matt Russell. Northwich responded with a powerful shot from Callum Gardner which saw a diving stop from Barnes but the Skem ‘keeper was powerless to deny an equaliser two minutes later as Harry Cain riffled a shot from long range which flew past Barnes for 1-1.
The sides went into the interval on level terms but early in the second half, both had good chances to go ahead, first Jack Grimshaw drew a stop from Aghayere before Cain saw two chances in as many minutes saved by Barnes. The latter led to a corner which saw Mitchell connect to Cain’s corner to head across the goal past Barnes to give ’74 the lead on 56 minutes.
Jack Irlam looked to repeat his defensive partner’s luck but could only head over from a corner on 63 minutes before another powerful shot from Cain sailed past the near post. His luck improved two minutes later as he fired past Barnes for his second goal and 74’s third of the evening for a 3-1 lead on 66 minutes.
Chances soon decreased for both sides with the next clear chance coming on 83 minutes with Mitchley’s cross-goal shot being deflected behind for a corner . A late flurry involving the substitutes of both sides followed, Barnes denying Taylor Kennerley twice either side of Aaron Smith’s effort past the post while Stephen Wainwright swept a shot over the bar at the other end.
The final whistle sounded with 1874’s fans celebrating a huge win while United’s perfect away record came to an end after four great victories.
