Cabinet considers changes to Moss Hey Lane, Mere Brow

A proposal to close the southern section of Moss Hey Lane, at its junction with Southport New Road (A565) near Mere Brow, to motorists is being considered this week.

Lancashire County Council’s cabinet will discuss the closure at its meeting on Thursday 13 September, following concerns about the number of accidents at the junction.

A consultation with local people and businesses was carried out, after a study showed there were 17 accidents at the junction over the last five years. Five of these accidents resulted in serious injuries and 12 in more minor injuries.

The majority of collisions were the result of vehicles failing to observe the ‘Give Way’ when crossing the A565 from Moss Hey Lane in either direction.

Of the 17 collisions, a total of 8 collisions may have been prevented if the proposed closure had been in place.

Rina Housbey, principal road design engineer for Lancashire County Council, said: “We’ve put this report together after looking at how the junction is used and analysing the incident and collision data.

“There have been 17 accidents at the junction of Moss Hey Lane and Southport New Road over five years, which is higher than you would expect for a road of this nature.

“People’s safety is our main concern and the proposal would help to reduce the risk of accidents, as many were caused by cars crossing the A565.

“Cabinet will now consider the proposal to close the road and make a decision at its meeting this week.”
