Lancashire County Council’s cabinet has agreed to permanently expand Shuttleworth College in Padiham and Unity College in Burnley.
These expansions are needed to meet the demand for places following the closure of Hameldon Community College in Burnley.
At the meeting held yesterday (Thursday 8 August), the main recommendations agreed by Cabinet were to:
• Approve a permanent expansion of 30 pupil places per year from September 2020 at Shuttleworth College, through the provision of additional permanent accommodation on the existing school site, subject to obtaining relevant planning permission
• Approve a permanent expansion of 30 pupil places per year from September 2020 at Unity College, through the provision of additional permanent accommodation on the existing school site, subject to obtaining relevant planning permission
• Approve the expenditure for the permanent expansion of the two schools
Both campuses will be expanded to allow for the extra pupils, subject to relevant planning permissions being obtained.
The extra places that are needed for September 2019 have been provided temporarily by the schools taking on the additional pupils.
The colleges will expand permanently from September 2020 through the provision of additional permanent accommodation on the existing sites.
The expansion will increase the number of places for new applicants at Shuttleworth College, on Burnley Road, from 210 to 240 each year from 2020. An extra 150 places will be created at the school within five years.
The number of places at Unity College, at Towneley Holmes, will increase from 240 to 270 each year. An extra 150 places will be created at the school within five years.
County Councillor Phillippa Williamson, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Schools, said: “The county council is responsible for making sure that there are enough school places to meet the demand.
“We are constantly reviewing changing demographic factors to make sure that we have the right number of school places throughout the county, and we knew that there was a need for some additional secondary places in this part of the county.
“The two colleges will be able to provide the extra places permanently.”
