As part of St Helens Council’s Arts Council funded Cultural Hubs – Arts In Libraries Programme, the winner of Best Spoken Word at last year’s Greater Manchester Fringe & Amnesty International Poetry Slam Winner, performance poet JB Barrington performs in St Helens for the first time on Friday 26 June.

Think poetry isn’t for you? Then think again! Having just completed a tour with outspoken punk/hip hop duo Sleaford Mods and having previously toured with The Fall and Shaun Ryder’s Black Grape, JB Barrington’s shows are a rollercoaster of emotions with a brilliant and imaginative display of poetic writing that speaks as much to music fans as traditional poetry fans. It’s a must see evening of entertainment and it’s also very funny.

With immense power in his flexibility of atmospheres, stimulating emotion and magnifying perspectives which prod the conscience through social issues, economics, class and loss, JB has won many fans, including Johnny Vegas who recently said of JB’s work: “Lovely stuff – touches heart strings and the odd raw nerve.”

Cllr Andy Bowden St Helens Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing said: “JB Barrington is a wonderful poet and performer who creates quick-witted work that appeals to everyone in society.

“Through his work JB gives a voice to people who often don’t get their voices heard as he tells stories that will resonate and connect to the people of St. Helens.

“Our Cultural Hubs – Arts In Libraries programme continues to draw in top notch performers” Cllr Bowden added, “and it is fitting that someone of the quality of JB would choose to perform as part of the programme, so be sure to get your ticket, before they sell out.”

There will be two separate performances on the day. At 5pm JB is supported by Young Storyteller of the Year 2014, Jake Evans, and then at 7pm things take a turn for the ruder with support from poet Carol Robson. Expect some strong language at this later show.

Tickets for the shows cost between £2.50 and £6 or £7 for both shows. Tickets can be purchased from St Helens Central library or online at www.culturalhubs.eventbrite.co.uk.
