A Geology with Physical Geography student at Edge Hill University has been rewarded for her course efforts by picking up a prestigious award.

Amanda Hughes was nominated by her tutor, Senior Lecturer in Geology, Dr Joaquin Cortés, as the best performing second-year student on her course, picking up the Institute of Quarrying National Student Award.

The 20-year-old from Ormskirk received a certificate of achievement and two years’ free student membership and magazine subscription to the Institute of Quarrying.

“I feel honoured and extremely grateful for the nomination and for the recognition of my hard work over the past year”, Amanda said. “I’m extremely grateful to the EHU Geography and Geology department for their continued support and encouragement.”

“The decision to nominate Amanda was easy”, admitted Dr Cortés. “I have been teaching Geology for more than 15 years in the UK, USA and South America and in my career, I have met only a few students of Amanda’s calibre.

“When I was contacted by the Institute of Quarrying to nominate an appropriate recipient for their National student award, I did not hesitate to nominate her.

“When she started studying with us it quickly became clear that she was someone outstanding. I am the lecturer of several of the modules in our Geology programme and in all of them, Amanda has shown a consistent pattern, always obtaining the best grades, regardless of the specific subjects or difficulty. In fact, I cannot recall any module in which Amanda has not obtained an ‘A’ as final grade!”

Other benefits of the award include the opportunity of getting invited to networking events and professional help with career development.

“Although Amanda is a very motivated and hard-working student, being highly successful from an academic perspective, this is not a complete picture”, Dr Cortes added. “From a personal point of view, she is also pleasant, amicable, compassionate and kind, making her respected and esteemed by her classmates.”

Amanda added: “I am focused on completing my dissertation going into third year and I’m hoping to continue into post-graduate education after leaving Edge Hill. I believe this will be a brilliant addition to my academic CV going forward and I’m thankful to the Institute for their recognition.”
