A fantastic day of celebrations lined up for the Sandy Lane Centre

0

Come along to the Sandy Lane Centre in Skelmersdale on Saturday 12 November for a fantastic day of entertainment and celebration.

A special free exhibition has been organised by West Lancashire Borough Council’s Arts Development Service, in partnership with The Friends of Sandy Lane. This is the result of a successful funding application to Arts Council England. The aim was to engage the community and develop artwork to animate the Sandy Lane Centre. This event has been planned to celebrate the exciting results of workshops led by Neil and Fiona Osborne, from arts organisation One Red Shoe, and writer Sarah Schofield. Chris Bentley from Skelmersdale Heritage Society provided significant support and archive material.

The exhibition opens on 12 November and will feature contributions from Park Children’s Centre, Beacon View Residential Home, Divine Days, Greenhill Community Centre, St Richard’s Primary School and West Lancashire High School. All images, stories and sculptures have been inspired by local heritage and people attending the workshops. So make sure you visit and learn more about the local area. The Hidden Garden, the story written by Sarah Schofield in collaboration with the people who took part in the workshops, will be available on the day.

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition an exciting free event has been planned for 12 November from 11am-3pm which will include music, live entertainment, and creative workshops. Frolicked Theatre will provide great entertainment with their walk about performance ‘Boggarts’, who are little leaf goblins. Be careful not to antagonise these little creatures – they may be small but they’re full of mischief! There are three shows during the day, with the first one at 11am.

The new Tree House Gallery, gift shop and café has also opened. This has been set up by the Friends of Sandy Lane with the support of West Lancashire Borough Council and has been developed to improve resources for the local community.

The opening exhibition at the Tree House Gallery is New Creatives by final year students at West Lancashire College, and features a great variety of themes and media.

Gary Owens, Creative Arts Course leader at West Lancashire College, said: “It is fantastic for our talented students to be able to display their work in a gallery space which is open to the public. I hope people who see the exhibition are as proud of the work that these young local artists have made as we are.”

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, Council portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “This is going to be a really exciting day for the Sandy Lane Centre so come along and join in the fun.”
